Model Railway Trains Are Enjoyable

By David Blackburn

This is about my brother, Michael. He is gone now. He just died a few months ago. I am his older brother and only sibling. My brother discovered model railway trains when we were younger. At first, he had no love for them. It is funny but, I truly believe these trains saved his life. I am so thankful for them.

According to my daddy, grandpa had been building model sets since daddy was a little boy. Daddy told me of all the Christmases they had with a train running around the tree. My ears could not stop listening to how thrilled my daddy was to watch the locomotive spin around and around. My father would imagine that he was the engineer.

My grandfather would spend his free time working with his model trains. He was so committed to keeping an ambiance of nostalgia that he worked for hours. Grandma used to lightly scold him for "playing" with his toys so much. But, grandma understood that this hobby was something grandpa loved and she did nothing to pull him from it.

Grandpa was good at modeling with clay. He would show me how to mold the clay into little people, dogs, cats, birds and other various sights from nature. The trees were made from carved cardboard and then painted. I made a horse once and it turned out pretty good. Even grandma said I did a better job than grandpa.

Anger built in my brother. A rage so thick, we did not know how to stop it. Michael would trail off on his own only to return late at night. mum was so busy with trying to keep the roof over our heads and food in our bellies, that she just could not find out how to help Michael. He kept getting in trouble and stealing became a way of life for him. I did not tell mum. I was overwhelmed and felt helpless.

It always enthralled me to touch and see all the tiny railway cars. Grandpa was never afraid to let me touch because I took great care not to drop or break anything. I saw the love he had in his eyes anytime he got a new railway carriage. No, it was not the love he would have for a person, it was the pride he had for an item he treasured.

Michael did as mum said. She went with him. Mr. Bradford had a simple train set in the back of the store where the older gentlemen sat. After the apologies, Mr. Bradford asked mum if he could show my brother something. When my brother saw that little train set, his eyes glowed with tears.

I have never forgotten all the times we shared working on this adored hobby. It was not work to us. It was something we could do as we relaxed and told each other about our days. My grandfather and I went fishing but, we spent more time with those trains than anything else. He left precious memories to me and I thank him for taking time to give me what no one else could, his time. - 30326

Model Railway Trains - Everything You Need To Know To Get Started In The World's Greatest Hobby

By Clint Spille

There are several styles model railway railways to choose from. It can be overwhelming to the point where you feel like you don't know where to start. You can buy model train trains that are as large as a quarter or half the size of a real railroad. Then there exist model train trains that are as small as 1/220th the size of an actual train.

Model railroads can be seen in venues such as amusement parks, carnivals and some of the more sizable ones are used for tours of nature preserves as they hardly spoil the natural beauty of the area. While models of this size may seem a bit excessive, not to mention costly this is not entirely so.

The benefit of greater sized model train railways is that they can be used for more than just transporting people around an amusement track. For example, if you own a huge piece of real estate a 1/8th sized functional model railway train could be used to transport items such as crops, feed, chopped wood and anything else that needs to be taken a long distance across your land.

Model railway trains can be fully functional steam models with real wood or coal fired combustion chambers and other features that contribute to their overall functionality. While you may think these trains are expensive to invest in, that's not really the case at all.

The initial cost-cutting feature is that these model train railroads are issued to you as a prefabricated kit. All the effort required from you to construct it yourself is to follow a friendly instructional video. You can order a kit for the model railroad train engine whether you want steam or electric power.

Many companies offer plans for model train cars, that you can build, and they even supply all the necessary hardware like couplers, base framework or wheels. It is a good idea to stick with premanufactured train rails, so you get a quality product right away.

That way you don't concern yourself with details such as scale, specifications on load bearings, or other possible problems. All that's needed of you is that you accurately follow the installation instructions and provide your model railway train with a stable foundation. The cost of model railroad railway kits is presently low and foundry workers are hard pressed for jobs.

It is very likely that you have nowhere to put something this large if you wanted it. As a result, you can purchase model trains that may be suited for whatever scale you need them in.

You could especially get model railway kits that can be little enough to fit inside for just display. HO scale is the most standard setting for these models. You will easily get replacement parts and accessories with this set of measurements. You can effectively showcase them in a layout and can be handled easily due to its size.

Sometimes you can find specialty packs like ones that cater to holiday themes. Many of these model train railroad specialty packs many times will come with a holiday-themed engine. Often times you will find these engines emit novelty "smoke" or even emit music. This normally features as a simple oval track with some pieces of festive props such as decorated homes, carol-playing figurines, or even actual lighted lamp posts.

Something parents should be mindful of when contemplating a model railroad railroad as a gift is that they have components that will involve an electrical outlet. Some of the less complicated models might be battery powered or even moved by hand via a wooden track.

However, if you are purchasing such a gift for an adult, knowing how much space that individual has to work with once they receive the gift and the level of interest that they have in model railway trains are important considerations that must be made. - 30326

Model Train Scenery Quick Tips

By Clint Spille

Model train scenery is probably the second most enjoyable thing about model trains, with the intricacies of the engines and cars being number one and layout in the number three spot. While you would do an initial layout plan first, it's the scenery that makes your creation come to life.

It isn't just trees and landscaping that we are talking about, but all kinds of different ways to decorate you layout ideas. While it's true that you can spend the time to make your own model train scenery, buying plastic plants to tear apart for trees and shrubs, or snagging a toy car or figurine once in awhile from your kids.

You could especially make buildings out of tin cans and cardboard, putting them together with a little arts and crafts skill and painting them however you like. Keep in mind, though, that no matter how much energy you put into them, your model train scenery just won't look the same if it's just homemade; it could be the wrong size for one.

Unless you are quite skilled at painting and modeling, you will never get the same quality of detail as you will from products that are specifically made for the train hobbyist. The product and accessory options are far better than anything you can come up with in many cases.

This is especially factual of objects that will bear weight, like trestles and bridges. You could find props for your scenery that may even go with the seasons or holidays, like Christmastime accessories complete with carolers and scale lighten lampposts, as well as snow.

The people and vehicles of pre-constructed model train scenery are proportionate to the size of the train, meaning that the people figurines look like they could fit inside the train cars, not on them. Many mechanisms work in conjunction with the train's electrical wiring and can be operated remotely from the command center.

You have to find correct model train scenery in order to get the best effect. The layout needs to match the train; you don't need a cargo train running around a scale forest if it's meant to deliver to a small town, so get the right stuff.

If you are utilizing a fairly flat town or city layout, and your trains deliver goods, you may want to abstain from overwhelming your landscape with trees, mills, and other timberland associated objects. Some more appropriate items for transport trains would be; some warehouses, an oil refinery, and potentially a couple of semi tractor-trailers.

You may want to consider various animals, some farm buildings, a grain silo or two, and almost certainly a windmill if you have chosen selected a country setting for your model train layout. To add your own flair to your model railroad scenery, look for the ready to use pieces available to railway hobbyists, that allow you to put the scenery together. In this way, you can have the professional detail that you want for your railroad set, but still have the opportunity to take part in its creation. Model train scenery can be found in a number of places, including area hobby shops and on the Internet.

You can find model train scenery from a wide range of places, both on the Internet and at many local hobby shops. It might be a wise idea to visit online shops first, even if you may have to order products online, because they can answer many of your questions as well as show you what they do have in stock.

This will give you a detailed look at the extent of the detail that is used to create some of these model train scenery parts. - 30326

Model Train Sets Overview, Price, Options

By Clint Spille

Possibly, there are just as many types of model railroad sets as varieties of real trains. It is not challenging to ascertain them on the internet or in a hobby store in your local town. You can get ones that appear just like actual railroads, fancy ones, trains from the future, and about everything else.

The sets will have not just the cars, engine, and tracks, but will have buildings also and scenery that you can use to create a simple layout.

The New Bright Sleigh Bell Holiday Express G is a model train set that has shown to be very special. The holiday theme is presented through big, powerful colors, and you can get the complete train, from engine to caboose.

There are 75 different lights on it, it has bell or a whistle sounds, and it performs several Christmas songs. It also has 12 curved tracks and 8 unbent, a water tower, and a transformer that will render the set the power it needs to run. Other cars from New Bright won't be able to adapt to this model railway set, but there are several Holiday Express cars that are acquirable.

You can power 80 feet of train track with the transformer, but it may have difficulty powering that and the optional musical clock tower if you decide to get that as well as everything else. This comprehensive list of materials runs around $235, but you can buy it for cheaper in some retail on the internet stores.

One other of the most usually bought model railroad sets is known as Bachmann Digital Commander, and is the Deluxe HO Set, and the model number is 00501. Two unlike trains come with this model railway set, and it has On Board Technology from DCC, which allows you to use both of the railroads singly, but together.

You'll be able to have your trains go varying speeds and directions, as well as adjust the lighting. Both EMD FT locomotives and EMD GP40 trains are found here in this great and comprehensive railway set. Additionally received are three freight cars, a caboose, and a rerailer mechanism.

It also includes enough track to make a 47x38" oval track, and of course the command center, power pack and magnets. It also includes a DVD E-Z command instruction video, and illustrated manual.

This model railroad set sells for about $300, but you might be able to find it for less than $200.

There are several more model train sets ready for you if you want. You might even buy many more accessories and kits to boost them. There are scenery packs that allow you to set the stage for your railroad, which run from small towns to trestles, giving you a mountain to travel around.

There are tons of pictures and videos online of other layouts that enthusiasts have constructed, so you can get ideas. The only boundary is your wallet and your imagination.

You are not alone in your endeavors, as you can get together with other people who share your passion in clubs and even model train museums. There are model train set contests that can be made where people battle against each other for the most creative layout; you can even place them in landscaping configurations to display your hard work outside. - 30326

Electronics - How They Bring Life to Model Trains

By Daryl Clayton Kennedy

Before electronics hit the scene in the late 19th Century modelers had to rely on more subtle modalities of propulsion for their locomotives. Even as electricity dazzled the early train antsiest, and electrical mastery was becoming more evident, it was still a grand challenge to operate two locomotives on one layout.

In the 1940s' Lionel introduced a truly unique two channel system that had the ability to change frequencies by oscillating electrons and transmitting signals through relays leading to the rails.

The operator could control the locomotive through the use of a toggle switch or dial to manipulate train direction and speed. Unfortunately Lionel's system was unnecessarily bulky and cumbersome.

Lionel's lack of electronic prowless gave just enough room for electronics giant GE to step in and play ball for an inning or two! GE shoveled out a fabulous 5 channel masterpiece that topped Lionel's previously king of the block 2 channel system. GE's newer, improved command control allowed for multiple control of several trains on one block!

GE called this system ASTRAC (Automatic Simultaneous Train Control). This new system from GE utilized a silicon based rectifier that Incorporated a receiver in each cab. The receiver responded to signals within the tracks sent by a transmitter mounted elsewhere.

Later came other systems such as, Dynotrols Carrier Control which was popular for a while in the sixties and seventies. These early command control devices shared a major setback which held the industry down for a few years. These control devices where not at all compatible. This meant you had to have all the components made by the same manufacture as different companies followed different electrical blueprints and guidelines. You could easily short out your layout or even worse cause a serious electrical fire.

Lenz, a well know European DCC innovator, suggested that then industry device a system in which compatibility of model train decoders, power stations and transmitters be universal. These decisions paved the way for the diverse DCC industry we're privileged with today.

If your decoders and transmitters follow NMRA guidelines, you're a go in the DCC field. Don't forget to test your electronics with a multimeter before use. This will isolate detection of problems if they accure. - 30326

Traditional Christmas Gift Ideas

By Henry Davidson

Although the Zhu Zhu pets were only released in August of this year, they have become a runaway success already. Children nationwide have gone crazy for the cute little motorized hamsters that incorporate artificial intelligence which lets them interact with their environment, the other Zhu Zhu hamsters and the kids who are playing with them.

Obviously the hamsters are cute, small and furry - but additional to this, kids really seem to enjoy the interaction. The Zhu Zhu family - Mr. Squiggles, Pipsqueak, Chunk, Num Nums and Patches - have more than forty sounds which they produce when given the right external stimulus. For example, if they go into the bathroom area of their hamster house, they produce tooth brushing noises. If they enter their hamster bedroom then they emit snores - and so on.

Unfortunately a lot of retailers have made a conscious decision to run with lower stock levels than usual this year. The decision is due, in part at least, to the current economic climate and in part to the fact that stock levels last year were set too high. Many stores had to offer large discounts to clear their shelves.

It's perfectly understandable that this decision was made - but looking at sales figures thus far, it does look as if the retailers may have misjudged the mood of consumers. Popular toys like the Zhu Zhu pets and Mattel's Mindflex game are flying off the shelves. Supply is lagging demand and it's fast becoming extremely difficult to locate these toys in stores. The closer we get to Christmas, the worse this will become.

Many retailers, having realized their error, are now trying to arrange for new deliveries of stock. However, most toys are manufactured in Asia these days, which means that new deliveries will have a sea voyage of a few weeks at least. Building up stock levels in time for Christmas will simply not be possible in many cases.

It's now possible, as a result of the huge gap between supply and demand, to find Zhu Zhu hamsters selling on eBay for more than $ 150. That's way above the normal ticket price - and prices could rise even more as Christmas draws near and parents become desperate. It's a lot of money to pay for a child's toy which, even if it is currently all the rage, will probably be yesterday's news a few months from now.

If you don't want to pay inflated prices for the latest fad, then you might want to consider more traditional gifts this Christmas. Classic traditional toys such as Lego, Scrabble, Monopoly and Hornby Dublo train sets are classics for a reason. They are always a welcome addition to any child's toy box and they will most likely still be in use and giving enjoyment long after this year's craze is forgotten. - 30326

Trains In Seattle Bring Out The Inner Child

By Owen Jones

Boys and girls of all ages like trains and train sets. They have played a vital part in the history of this country and Seattle, Washington and the Northwest in particular. In fact, the roles of trains in this part of the country have in the past been so critical that there are a couple of museums dedicated to them. Trains were essential supply routes for the people here for many years. While their importance seems to be diminishing in today's society, their importance throughout the history of our country remains.

If you truly are a train enthusiast, then it should not be difficult to talk you into stopping by Seattle's Train Center before and after touring the museums devoted to trains and their vital role in history. The Train Center offers a wide selection of model train parts and pieces that would make excellent additions to your train set or a great beginning for a train set for you or your kids.

After you've whetted your appetite for trains and gotten your child all excited about them, it is time to take a walk back in time to the Northwest Railway Museum. There you can learn about railway history or even decide to take a ride on one of the trains that departs on several trips throughout the day. Most of the excursions are 65-75 minutes long and are a remarkable treat for young and old alike. Perhaps the greatest thing about this museum is that its main purpose is to educate the public about the important function that railroads had in the development of this part of the country.

If you're really interested in sharing your affection for trains with the ones you love, you may think about taking a turn on the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train. This is a great way to not only get the experience of riding the rails but to take in some of the beautiful Washington scenery and have a gourmet meal in the process. During the months of November through to April up to two children may ride free with a paying adult.

There are certain restrictions on the type of seating, but it is a great way to get the event at a vastly reduced price. There are also special events such as Murder Mystery Trains and Magic and Illusion shows in addition to certain holiday events as well. Be sure to check out what is going on while you are visiting Seattle and see if this is something that might interest you and your family.

If you are up for a not so short drive to Pasco (about three and a half hours from Seattle), you might find the Washington State Railroads Historical Society Museum well worth the journey. Be sure to remember that the museum is only open on Saturday and that the hours are restricted so this is a journey you need to plan in advance. The greatest thing about this museum to me is the fact that there are lovely little stories, like the blackboard that recorded the first snowfall at the depot each year and others such as this.

It is the short stories that do not necessarily make history that do make lasting impressions and I am glad to see this particular story is being shared. Just bear in mind, when visiting any of these depots, museums, and train tours that you definitely must bring your inner child with you in order to enjoy them as you should. - 30326

Model Train Rock Molds - How to Create Realistic Rockey Terrain

By Daryl Clayton Kennedy

Rocks can be simulated a variety of ways. Some techniques are seemingly more popular than others. To save time and in order to prevent writers cramp I will give you a play by play on the most popular technique.

Your first move is to use a photo to determine grade of rock you wish to portray. Secondly you'll need to put on your walking shoes and head out the front door to find suitable scale replicas. Most likely you can find a handful lying around the yard or possibly you'll need to partake in a little nature hike in order to locate a good specimen.

Once you've found your lucky charm start the molding process by cleaning your rock, consequently assuring the truest molding possible. After assuring rock surface is fit for duty then it's time to apply your liquid latex. Cover drape rock completely with latex. Once latex is dry repeat basting with latex two or three more times.

After you've finished the initial layers of latex, drape your casting with gauze and place even another layer of trusty latex atop your newly formed mold!

I know what you must be thinking... it sounds like a heck of a lot of work and to some it may be, so here is your alternative. Go to your nearest hobby shop or model train dealer and purchase a pre-fabricated mold or purchase one online!

You can save a little time and money by reducing the number of molds you purchase and simply re-using your existing mold. Create individuality by reversing your molds or alternating their position.

When choosing this method dint forget to randomize your placement of molds. This will create the illusion of individuality.

By tracing these methods, you'll provide your model train layout with the most realistic scenery possible. Don't forget to mix up your moldings in order to provide a touch of individuality! - 30326

Electronic Hurdles of Running Multiple Model Trains

By Daryl Clayton Kennedy

Model train lovers of all ages and skill levels will be the first to inform you that operating their layout is a blast with simply one locomotive circling the tracks. Those same modelers will also scream to you the excitement of handling 3 or 4 scale model locomotives traversing their rails.

To grab hold of the throttle and speed up one train, slow down another, and keep a third from slamming into them both, you must embrace cab control techniques and wiring required to make it tick! Power packs that AMP up power, toggle switches that choose your train of desired control and throttle cabs are the crucial tools needed in dodging your own disastrous bullets!

Solving Problems of Operating Multiple Model Locomotives

Independent control of separate trains requires you connect each model train to a separate power pack through different blocks of track. Blocks are electrically isolated sections of track divided by insulation in your rails.

Switches are used to connect however many switches you have directly to the tracks via a wire from the switch to the track. Then the toggle switch reaches out to one of the cabs with an additional wire. There is a common connection or wire between however many cabs you support and the rail opposite your switches wire on the tracks. These wires are also many times referred to as the Block Feeder and Common Feeder.

Your switch will also have a wire called a common connection that interlocks each individual cab, creating a web of well disciplined electrical communication. The cab is responsible for informing your trains engines which way to run and how fast to get there. The magic of this electrical orchestra can only be accomplished if the switch is also connected to the opposite rail of its Block Feeder.

As a model train conductor you're aware of the dangers in running multiple locomotives around a single layout. Be on the look out for out of control locomotives bad track switches. Bad timing is also of concern as an improperly planed turnout or a simple passing in the yard could yield grave results if not on your toes.

That's the basics. We hope this information is useful and keep tuning in for more on model trains and model train electronics. - 30326

Electronics Required to Operate More Than One Model Train

By Daryl Clayton Kennedy

As a model train enthusiast you are familiar with the joys of conducting one model train on a single layout. It's safe to assume that manipulating multiple locomotives is twice or perhaps three times as gratifying.

Resolving Issues Surrounding Conduction of Scale Model Locomotives

To independently control multiple locomotives you'll need to attach your trains to separate power packs on their own blocks of track. These blocks are divided into sections by insulation positioned in the rails.

The same switch carrys common connections leading to which ever number of cabs you use. Your cab controlls your model trains forward, reverse and velocity. In order for this all to work your switch must be also connected to the opposite rail. This is achieved through a feed known as a Common Feeder attached to the opposite rail of the Block Feeder.

As a model train conductor you're aware of the dangers in running multiple locomotives around a single layout. Be on the look out for out of control locomotives bad track switches. Bad timing is also of concern as an improperly planed turnout or a simple passing in the yard could yield grave results if not on your toes.

Ok, that's it. This information has given you the heads up on electronic accessories and controlls needed to govern multiple locomotives in a single layout. - 30326

Christmas Shopping Methods

By Frank Williams

Christmas shopping can be seen as an unqualified thrill or as a necessary evil. It is a thrill to be out and about amid the sights and sounds of the time of year and the jovial crowds. But for the same reasons, others fear shopping at Christmas time. These days, you do not need to leave your home much or at all to get your Christmas and holiday shopping done. That is because the Internet puts shopping at your fingertips and rather than competing with traditional retail stores, the Internet has actually expanded the aptitude of traditional stores to sell more merchandise to a bigger number of people in a larger number of places.

Both large and small retailers can be found at their dedicated Web sites on the Internet. Most will also offer items that can be found in the store. However, online retail sites will often have additional items for sale, or access to additional items, that are not yo be found in the store.

Another advantage of shopping on the Internet is that it gives admission to stores situated anywhere in the world. It has therefore become easier to order a unique gift from a niche or specialty boutique store in locations that you otherwise would not be able to get to. It is also easy to do comparison shopping using 'shop bots' or simply by comparing prices yourself.

If Christmas shopping is done through the Internet, you have to pay careful attention to the order times and any cut-off dates to get an item delivered in time for Christmas. Based on likely volume, most sites will give a date or the number of hours within which orders have to be confirmed for guaranteed delivery of the products before Christmas.

The mall is a popular place for traditional Christmas and holiday shopping. Precincts offer one-stop shopping and have a large assortment of merchandise, which can minimize the tedious searching of dozens of stores for some exclusive item. The stores will also be beautifully decorated for Christmas, have splendid displays and a Santa Claus to interrelate with children. These and other activities that are usually at the mall during Christmas and the holidays also make them an interesting place to take children to take pleasure in some of the season's delights.

To maximum benefit from shopping at the mall, you will need to know the discrepancies between the mall department stores. You will need to find out which stores have elite brands, which stores are reasonably priced and which are more up-market.

There are also the specialty stand-alone stores and spinoff store branches for children and adolescents that try to fill a particular niche. As an example, stores have emerged that carry only styles associated with hip-hop culture or styles that have an 'urban' look. So it may be worthwhile starting your shopping at a specialty store, because they are more focused, and then continue onto a department store that has a wider assortment.

Another fascinating place to shop in precincts are the stand-alone kiosks that are often located at intervals in the open areas of a precinct where there is a lot of foot traffic. These kiosks are more likely to carry one-of-a kind products, which can provide ideas for Christmas gifts.

Also at malls will be specialized shops that offer home/household products, books, music and movies, electronics, sports gear and shoes.

All of the sorts of precinct stores previously mentioned can also be found at Outlet or Factory Precincts or Warehouses, which offer lower prices. These stores often carry clearance products from their associated precinct store, merchandise with minor flaws and merchandise that is made for the outlet. Those items of merchandise usually have minor style variations from what is found in mall stores and may also be manufactured from different materials.

A final place to consider for Christmas shopping is city center businesses. They are frequently small and personal, have unique offerings and offer more personalized assistance. Although city center businesses are also likely to be crowded at Christmas time, there is likely to be less of a crush of people than that found at theprecincts. - 30326

Holidays Or Vacations - Be Alert For Bedbugs In Hotels Or Resorts

By Dorothy Yamich

Most people who travel on holidays and vacations and stay at resorts or hotels never expect it, but they may have some unwanted guests. Bed bugs definitely do not make very good resort or hotel roommates when you are on a holiday or vacation.

Even the best of the luxurious five-star resorts and hotels can on occasion get an infestation of bed bugs. This can be sometimes be unavoidable as hundreds and even thousands of travelers and tourists can be staying at a hotel or resort at any given time. These tiny blood drinking critters can easily hitch a ride on unsuspecting travelers or hide in their luggage. Hotel and resort managers alike are very aware of this possible problem and do their best to prevent this from happening.

What do these blood sucking pests look like?

Bedbugs are very tiny, flat, wingless bugs. Their size can vary from a head of a pin to about one-quarter of an inch in length when fully mature. They have an oval shape and look like small watermelon seeds. Their color can vary from a translucent yellow to a dark reddish brown. If they have just dined on a traveler's blood they may appear dark brown or black in color.

How easy are they to see?

Most vacationers are unaware of bedbugs until they see red bite marks on their bodies and start scratching their itchy wounds. Bed bugs can be extremely difficult to find if the infestation is light. Their eggs are very tiny and about the size of grains of rice which are even harder to see. To make matters even worse they tend to be nocturnal so they are waking up and looking for a blood breakfast when most vacationers are tired and going to sleep.

When you check into your room it is advisable to roll all the bed sheets, blankets and comforters down to see if you can find any bed bugs. A tell tale sign they're around are dark fecal spots or drops of dried blood on the linen, pillowcases, or in the seams around the mattress or box springs. You also may find what look like to be shells of bed bugs which are in fact the skins that they shed when they're maturing. If you can find any sign of their presence, phone down to the front desk and ask for another room. You may be able to get a decent discount on your hotel or resort room for the upsetting experience and inconvenience.

Bed bugs do not reflect on the cleanliness of hotels and resorts. These insects do not eat crumbs or dirt, or anything we may associate with unsanitary hotel room conditions. They only feed on blood. In terms of a vacationer's health, current research indicates that these insects do not appear to spread disease even though they can harbor well over twenty-five different pathogens.

Not everyone gets bitten by bed bugs. Sometimes, if there are two travelers asleep in the same bed, only one may get bitten. However, bed bugs don't discriminate. Given a chance they will gladly drink anyone's blood. Bed bugs are attracted by the heat of our bodies and the carbon dioxide that we exhale when we breathe. They also release chemicals that attract each other. These night crawlers move quickly and are excellent climbers. They can easily tag along in a traveler's luggage or on their clothing.

What can you do to avoid these pests when traveling on your holidays?

Unfortunately, apart from checking the linen, mattress, box springs, bed frames, behind the headboard, all upholstered furniture, and along the baseboards in your room, that's about all you can do.

Bed bugs are a universal problem and can be found in motels, bed and breakfasts, hostels, hotels, pod hotels, resorts, hospitals, airplanes, trains, cabs, buses, cruise ships, etc. These small blood suckers can be found near any readily available source of blood, like tired travelers. Bedbugs can even hitch a ride home with you and turn your home sweet home into a living hell.

What can you do to get rid of bed bugs?

You should leave this job to a professional pest control company as these insects are very difficult to get rid of. It is expensive and can take a lot of time treating an infestation of bed bugs which usually involves the use of pesticides and steam. This process may have to be repeated a number of times before the very hot steam and pesticides kill them all. Don't forget that the insects must come into direct contact with the hot steam and pesticides for these tactics to be completely effective.

As far as your house is concerned, prevention is easier and far less costly than a cure. In your home, you do not have to throw your mattress and box springs out. You can cover your mattress and box springs with zippered plastic coverings that will prevent bedbugs from hiding in the cracks and crevices of your mattress. There also are zippered plastic protectors that are just as effective in protecting your pillows. This will prevent any bedbugs that are inside from getting out. And at the same time it will prevent any new infestations from getting in, thus eliminating the mattress and box springs as a problem. However, this is only one part of the bed bug solution. You will still need to use steam and pesticides to fumigate any room of the home where they could be hiding.

There is a new and exciting revolutionary product that looks very promising for monitoring and eliminating bed bugs. It is called the NightWatch Bedbug Trap designed by Bio Sensory, Inc.. This small, easy to use product has a kairomone, carbon dioxide, and heat lure that traps and kills bed bugs. Under a monitored field test this product captured and killed over a thousand bed bugs. - 30326

Johns dreams landed in his lap when the Mobil & Ohio Railroad offered the 6"4' legendary engineer a position on their team. It's hard work and challenging at times but that's what Casey loved.

Upon the request of the H&O Railroad, John moved to Jackson, Tennessee in'81. While in Jackson the soon to be famous HERO lived in a popular boarding house. When asked where he was from....... John replied... CAYCE Kentucky!

The other engineers added the tag... and John Luther J. has been CASEY JONES ever scenes. The spelling of Casey as we're familiar is C-A-S-E-Y... although the town where Casey originates is spelled C-A-Y-C-E!

Casey married Janie Brady in'86 and they soon had three children of their own, John Jr., Helen and Charles. In'81 Casey switched railroads and landed on the Illinois central. In'90 Casey was promoted to engineer and given his own route...

The Years to Follow Would Be the Foundation a Legend would Stand On

Casey's punctuality was such that one could set their watch by it! Casey's reputation remains iron clad, it's his desperation to keep his reputation that seals his fate.

Caseys Remains King of the Rails - The Year is'00

Trouble brews as Casey is asked to pull an additional run, his fellow engineer unable to make the trip Casey bravely steps forward. Behind when Casey takes over the mighty engine #382 is pushed to it's peak. Casey and passengers are headed to Canton Tennessee when they discover trouble.

Old Engine #382 Pushed Passed 100mph

Casey was 40 minutes behind after taking over the run, by the time they neared Vaughn Casey managed to shave that down to only 10 minutes behind shedual. Casey was relentless and brought the mighty #382 past speeds of 100mph.

Trouble ahead as Casey and Sim where unaware of the broken switch at the stop ahead. The broken switch caused two trains to rest back to back forcing an end caboose and two other cars to hang out too far on the adjacent tracks.

Approaching at 75mph Casey Sees Harms Way Closing

No chance of stopping as it's... too late! Casey's Engine #382 collides with a jammed locomotive. Casey's last words remembered by those who can recount the story... JUMP Sim JUMP!

Sim later recalled that day and Casey's famous last words. With his hands gripping the break for his passengers and the lives of the poor souls ahead.

CRASH... the engine slammed hard like an atomic bomb! Casey saved everyone but himself as his tenacity on the break provided enough slowing to reduce their speed enough to where the passenger cars in tow where unscathed and no one was killed.

Casey was found in the wreckage gripping the break that saved the lives of so many. In his honer a song was created and Casey Jones went on to become an American HERO! - 30326

Diesel Locomotives and Model Train Maintenance

By Daryl Clayton Kennedy

Model train sets today arrive at you door ready to run. In no way does this imply completely dismissing pre operations testing.

Removing your model trains chassis is done with ease. Simply spread casting lugs by gripping chassis and spreading gently until casting is released.

After casting lugs release chassis, inspect for obvious defections such as bound gears, strange noises, and slower than normal push offs. If your loco isn't sitting on the track with ease, you may want to inspect your trucks for adjusting.

An almost instinctive first plan of attack is cleaning wheels. By purging your wheels of imminent dust clusters, you limit dust entering your motor and bogging down performance. To clean wheels attach test leads to motor, ignite engine, flip locomotive upside down and with your free hand apply abrasive block on wheels until they shine like new!

After the Inaugural Wheel Cleaning You are Wise to Inspect for Mechanical Gremlins

After your locomotives wheels are clean take apart their gearbox and inspect for plastic shavings and also take this opportunity to clean the inside of your gearbox. Once clean and dry, apply lubricant as needed. Be carefully not to apply access amounts as this can lead to the very problems you where attempting to avoid.

Pay extra special attention to the electrical connections housed in the trucks. These smooth metallic surfaces are the direct channel currents take when talking to your loco.

Upon completion of your tune up a test run is recommended. This will be the exclamation point that assures you a safe relaxing run.

In rapping things up you should be assured that once the above instructions have been followed you and your family will enjoy the fine hobby of modeling even more as you'll have cut your chances of having a really bad day expediently. By adjusting trucks and making sure they rest evenly on tracks and also by spit shinning your wheels for tangent connections you are lining yourself up for smooth rides and historical runs. If for any reason you should encounter problems simply trouble shoot familiar mechanical locations around your loco and test once more. If problems insist, it's not unheard of to have acquired a potentially bad decoder or possibly some other poorly functioning electrical component. - 30326

Model Train Track Cleaners Come in All Shapes and Sizes

By Daryl Clayton Kennedy

The two rail cleaners that stand out above the rest in function and quality are of a simply design. Before their identities are exposed I'd like to inform you that these widgets come in a variety of inconspicuous costumes. Refrigeration cars, stock locomotives and Yep... even box cars!

The prototypes pull extra duty as cleaning cars. They piggyback heavy rough sheets of Masonite carefully hitched to the underbelly of any locomotive you wish to bond Masonite cleaning attachment to. Made of heated, treated, pressurized wood shavings, this composite is a perfect tool for aggressively polishing your tracks while seemingly undergoing normal layout operations. These assistive cleaning slabs come in HO, S, N, G, and O scale attachments.

I recommend sliders, better known as track cleaners that utilize the rolling method of cleaning rail. They too can be found in HO, O, G, S, and N scales.

Recommendation 1... Manufactured by Centerline Products in a variety of gauges these home made mobile cleaners work by the roller rotating as the locomotive advances on the tracks rails. If you see black streaks scaring the towel as she is tugged along, then things are progressing nicely.

These cars may also incorporate the use of liquid cleaners. This attribute can only yield sharper tracks. I personally use Goo Gone as a cleaning solvent and find it to do nicely. There are other solvents such as electrical cleaners which work well when applied appropriately. Modelers who've been around for a while swear by a solution known only as NO-OX. This electrical cleanser by nature is said to really deliver it's bang for your buck as only small amounts are required to cover vast lengths of rail.

Recommendation 2... Slider Track Cleaning Cars. As discussed early on, sliders come in a variety of flavors. This is accomplished by providing a universal attachment for each individual gauge of track. Each scale has its own kit i.e. HO scale has a kit, S scale has it's own kit and so on. The kits play an interesting roll as they allow you to clean your rails while operating your layout without any one being the wise because there is no awkward looking out of place hunk of metal cruising behind your trains.

The coolest thing about sliders is that with a little creativity you can really build your own slider and save a few bucks! - 30326
